#76 Common Nighthawk Common Nighthawks are in the nightjar family, and contrary to their name are neither related to hawks nor are strictly nocturnal. During the summer months these cryptically-patterned birds appear at dusk and dawn to hunt insects in the skies across North America, flying acrobatically with quick flaps and turns. They make one of the longest migrations of any bird that breeds north of the equator, traveling the way to southern South America.
